Skills to Pratice this Month

  • Help your child to develop independence in eating.
    • Upon entering kindergarten, your child should be able to sit at a table, eat unassisted, and use silverware.

Activities
In kindergarten, children will make food choices and carry a tray in the cafeteria. Talk to your child about the importance of eating foods from all the food groups (if you aren’t healthy, your body won’t feel like learning).

Have your child practice carrying a tray with food and a drink. Create a cafeteria line in your kitchen to pretend and practice with your child. First have trays, then plates, napkins, utensils, and then food, and lastly, beverages. You can have real food or cut pictures of food from magazines or grocery ads. Choose items from each food group and allow your child to practice making healthy food choices.

Talk to your child about good table manners and ask him why they he thinks manners are important and ask them to name some good manners to have at mealtime. Create a manners chart with a list of good manners and the days of the week. Reward your child with stickers for having good manners. Praise your child for good manners and he will be proud of his accomplishments.
